Campanulastrum americanum (commonly known as the American Bellflower or Tall Bellflower, and historically classified as Campanula americana) is a striking wildflower native to eastern and midwestern North America. Unlike most traditional bellflowers, its lavender-blue blossoms are uniquely flat and star-shaped rather than cup-shaped.
It grows 3-6' and behaves as an annual or a biennial, depending on when the seeds germinate. Fall-germinating seeds act as annuals, while spring-germinating seeds spend their first year as a low-growing basal rosette of heart-shaped leaves before shooting up to flower in their second year.
Grows in partial to full shade and prefers rich, loamy, and consistently moist, well-drained soils. It is highly adaptable and can tolerate clay settings.
