Carex leavenworthii, commonly known as Leavenworth's sedge or lawn sedge, is a petite, fine-textured perennial sedge native to the central and southeastern United States and parts of Canada.

Forming tight, fountain-like emerald clumps, it functions as a highly adaptable, drought-tolerant lawn alternative or matrix plant for shady, low-input landscapes.

It is a densely tufted, clumping cool-season grass-like perennial that grows 6 to 12 inches tall and wide. It spreads primarily via seed rather than running aggressively by rhizomes.

It has exceptionally narrow, arching deep green leaves (about 1/8 inch wide) that offer a soft, grass-like appearance. It maintains a neat form and acts as a semi-evergreen to evergreen groundcover depending on regional winter severity.

In spring (typically April to May), slender wiry stems lift tight, inconspicuous greenish flower spikes just above the foliage. These mature into subtle, brown conical seed clusters.

This sedge is highly versatile; thrives in full sun, part shade, to full shade. In hot climates, part sun or bright dry shade is preferred to avoid burning.

 Adapts to a wide range of soil types, including sandy, rocky, or clay soils, provided they are well-drained. While it tolerates moist conditions, it is notably drought-tolerant once established, making it a stellar candidate for dry shade.

Maintenance: Extremely low maintenance. It can be mowed high (3 to 8 inches) a few times a year to maintain a turf-like look or remove old flower heads, though it requires no routine pampering.

Because it reads like fine turf but demands minimal watering, mowing, or fertilizer, it is ideal for woodland lawns and low-mow meadows.

It provides critical seeds for songbirds and gamebirds, serves pollinators, and is naturally deer and rabbit resistant.

It is frequently utilized in sustainable design to replace aggressive, non-native groundcovers like Liriope muscari.
