Dennstaedtia punctilobula is commonly known as the hay-scented fern.  It is a highly adaptable, native deciduous fern that is found throughout eastern North America.  When mown, or crushed, it will release the distinct aroma of fresh-mown hay

This fern can spread aggressively via a shallow network of creeping rhizomes and can form a dense, monolithic colony that easily supresses weeds, but can also suppress other desirable garden plants.

The fronds will grow 1-3' tall and thrives in dapples shade to deep shade.  It can tolerate full sun if the soil remains consistently moise.

It prefers moist, acidic, organically rich soils, but is remarkably resilient, and easily tolerates dry, rocky, or poor soils where other ferns struggle.

One of the most deer-resistant native plants available.

Host plant for specialized fern-eating moths, including the Regal Fern-borer, Callopistria mollissima.
