Hepatica is a small evergreen herb found growing in rich woodlands from Minnesota to Maine to Northern Florida west to Alabama.

Hepatica flowers, while lacking nectar, are attractive to pollinators like sweat bees, small carpenter bees, and flies, who are drawn to the pollen they produce.

Hepatica makes a lovely garden plant for shaded location with rich organic soils. Once established in a good location they will live for many years. They form colorful little clumps of flowers that will bloom with some of the first spring flowers such as the crocus.

As an early spring bloomer, Hepatica nobilis provides a vital food source for pollinators when few other plants are in bloom.
