This is a dense, woody deciduous to semi-evergreen native shrub that is prized for its vibrant yellow summer flowers and hardiness.

Grows 3-4' tall and wide and features handsome, fine-textured blue-green foliage that will turn yellow-green or purplish in the Autumn.

As the plant matures, the older branches will develop an attractive, flaky, exfoliating reddish-brown bark.  The flowers will transition into cone-shaped, reddish-brown seed capsules that persist well into the winter months.

Grows in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade.  Best blooms are produced in the full sun.

It prefers rich, sandy loams, but will successfully thrive in shallow, rocky, or limestone-heave soils.

Host plant for the Gray Hairstreak Butterfly, the Gray Half-Spot Moth, the Wavy-Lined Emerald Moth, and the St. John's Wort Spittlebug.
