Ilex verticillata, commonly known as winterberry holly, is a deciduous shrub native to eastern North America. Unlike typical evergreen hollies, it drops its leaves in autumn, revealing dense, striking clusters of bright red berries that persist throughout the winter.
It is widely celebrated in landscaping for its multi-season visual interest and exceptional ecological value to local wildlife.
This shrub grows 6-12' tall and wide and does well in full sun to partial shade. At least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight is recommended for the best flower and berry production.
It thrives in moist, acidic, organic loams and has a great tolerance for poorly drained, waterlogged, and clay soils, making it perfect for rain gardens and boggy areas.
Host plant for over 34 species of Lepidoptera including the Henry's Elfin Butterfly, the Harris' Three-Spot Moth and the Pawpaw Sphinx Moth.
It also supports specialized native bees which rely on the flowers for their pollen.
