Ilex verticillata 'Red Sprite', commonly known as Red Sprite Winterberry, is a compact, dwarf cultivar of the native North American deciduous holly. It is highly celebrated for its explosive display of large, glossy scarlet berries that cover its bare stems all winter, providing crucial food for birds and unparalleled cold-weather color.

Red Sprite stays a neat 3-5' tall and wide and its slow growth and rounded shape make it perfect for smaller gardens, low hedges, foundation plantings, or borders.

It grows best in full sun to partial shade.  At least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily is recommended for the best berry production.

It prefers acidic, organic, and highly moist to wet loams, but will handle clay, poorly drained areas, and seasonal flooding exceptionally well.

Host plant for many native insect species including the Henry's Elfin and Spring Azure Butterfly as well as over 30 species of native moths, most notably the striking Harris's Three-Spot Moth and the Pawpaw Sphinx Moth.
