Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red' (commonly known as Winter Red Winterberry) is a highly popular, prize-winning female cultivar of deciduous holly native to eastern North America.

It is widely celebrated by gardeners for its profuse, long-lasting clusters of bright cherry-red berries that remain on bare branches all winter long, providing striking seasonal interest and vital food for birds.

This is a slow-growing, multi-stemmed, upright rounded shrub that usually reaches 6-8' tall and wide.  It can naturally sucker to form dense thickets.

This shrub grows the most berries in full sun, though it will easily tolerate partial shade.  It prefers moist to wet, organic-rich, acidic soils.  It is very tolerant of poorly drained soils which makes it a good choice for boggy areas or rain gardens.

Host plant for over 34 species of Lepidoptera, including the Henry's Elfin Butterfly, the Pawpaw Sphinx Moth, Harris's Three-Spot Moth, and the Spring Azure Butterfly.
