Iris cristata 'Powder Blue Giant', commonly known as the dwarf crested iris, is a vigorous, award-winning native perennial prized for its oversized spring blossoms and tough garden performance.

Discovered by Samuel Norris in Kentucky in the 1960s and later named by Joe Pye Weed Gardens, this cultivar is highly celebrated for being significantly more robust than the straight species.

Powder Blue produces large, 3-inch wide flowers (nearly double the size of the typical species) in a soft powder-blue hue. The falls feature distinct butter-yellow crests highlighted by deep cobalt blue and white markings.

It forms low, dense mats of sword-shaped, medium green foliage that slightly arches, and reaches a mature height of 6 to 8 inches with a spread of 12 to 15 inches.

The flowers open from mid-spring into early summer (typically April to June depending on location).

This is a highly versatile species, thriving primarily in USDA Zones 5–8 (though adaptable from Zones 3 to 9 in many regions), and is best grown in part shade to full shade. It can tolerate full sun only if the soil is kept consistently moist.

It prefers organically rich, well-drained soil, but is highly adaptable and can manage everything from wet soils in rain gardens to dry shade under tree canopies once established.

Powder Blue is highly attractive to hummingbirds, native bees, and other pollinators.

It is also exceptionally deer-resistant and rabbit-resistant.

This is an excellent choice for shaded borders, woodland gardens, rock gardens, path edging, and naturalized ground covers. It also excels at erosion control on shady slopes due to its spreading rhizomes.
