Commonly known as the sweet crabapple, it is highly valued for its incredibly fragrant spring blossoms, and its ecological benefits to local wildlife.

This will grow as a large, densely branched shrub or a small tree reaching 15-33' tall and wide.  The larger branches commonly develop long, sharp, spur-like thorns and its rough bark ranges from reddish-brown to gray.

In late spring, it will produce clusters of intensely fragrant, 5-petaled flowers that open to a rosy pink and gradually fade to white.

In Autumn, the tree yields small, round, yellowish--green pomes about 1-2 inches in diameter.

This tree thrives in full sun to partial shade, and prefers rich, moist, well-drained soils and can accomodate a variety of soil textures, including loam and clay-loam..

This tree can be highly susceptible to common rose-family aiments, including apple scab, fire blight, powdery mildew, and cedar-apple rust.  Because of the rust, it should never be planted in close proximity to Eastern Red Cedar trees.
