It is commonly known as the Wild Petunia, and is a tough, low-growing native perennial that serves as an excellent larval host plant.

It grows 1-2' tall and has beautiful, 2-inch lavender-purple blooms.  

The species loves full sun to partial shade, and thrives in dry, poor, rocky, or sandy soils.  It also self-seeds readily via explosive seed pods that launch seeds away from the mother plant.

Host plant for the Common Buckeye, White Peacock, and the Common Wood-Nymph and is an important nectar source for Leaf-Cutter Bees and other Long-Tonged Pollinators.
