Wingstem, or Yellow Ironweed, is a tall, native North American perennial wildflower in the Aster family.
Wingstem Grows 4-8' on upright, stiff stems and features distinct, papery green "wings" running down the sides from the leaf bases.
It Produces small, daisy-like yellow flower heads (1–2 inches across) with drooping or reflexed petals from August to October.
It is found in moist wooded slopes, woodland borders, thickets, meadows, and along riverbanks or ditches.
This species thrives in full sun to partial or deep shade, and prefers consistently moist, organically rich soils, but adapts well to average or slightly drier conditions.
Best suited for native plant gardens, wildlife habitats, or large wildflower meadows rather than formal garden borders because it can spread aggressively.
Highly valued as a nectar source for bees, butterflies, wasps, and beetles.
Host Plant: Serves as a larval host for the silvery checkerspot, summer azure butterfly, and the gold moth.
