Yucca filamentosa, commonly known as Adam's needle or curlyleaf yucca, is a resilient, broadleaf evergreen perennial shrub native to the southeastern United States. Characterized by its dramatic architectural form, it features a dense basal rosette of rigid, sword-shaped leaves decorated with distinct, curly thread-like filaments along the margins. It is celebrated in landscaping for its tough-as-nails nature and its spectacular, towering spikes of bell-shaped, creamy white summer blossoms.

Foliage grows 2-3' tall and 3-5' wide.  When it is in bloom the spectacular flower spikes can reach heights of 5-8'.  This is a very long-lived perennial, often persisting for up to 50 years.

This plant thrives best in full sun, though it shows a surprising tolerance for partial shade.

It requires well-draining soil and easily suffers from root rot if left in standing water. It prefers sandy or gritty soils but adapts to heavy clay if well-drained. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and thrives on neglect.

This plant shares a famous, highly specialized symbiotic relationship with the Yucca Moth, Tegeticula yuccasella.

The plant relies exclusively on the moth for pollination. In return, the female moth deposits eggs inside the flower ovary, and her hatched larvae feed on a portion of the developing seeds. The remaining seeds stay intact to propagate the plant.  The showy, fragrant flowers also act as a magnet for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Fortifying its tough nature, the foliage is naturally deer and rabbit resistant.
