A stiff, grass-like, clump-forming plant, 8-15 in. tall. White to blue, six-petaled, star-like flowers with yellow centers occur in loose clusters at the top of each flowering stem. White-eyed grass blooms March through June. The genus Sisyrhinchium does not belong to the grass family, but rather is in the Iris family! These plants spread via underground rhizomes, and are great for erosion control, or edges.
Sisyrhinchium albidum is a valuable early-season nectar and pollen source for small native bees, sweat bees, and hoverflies. The seeds are also an important food source for birds, and they will use it for nesting material in the early spring.
