Ha Ha Tonka is a wild cultivar of Little Bluestem that was collected from seeds that were gathered by two incredible plantsmen, Cassian Schmidt, and Piet Oudolf. Cassian Schmidt gathered seeds that he collected in Missouri at the Ha Ha Tonka State Park. He brought the seeds to his home in Germany, and he and Piet collaborated in making selections of the species, and Ha Ha Tonka is their amazing result.
‘Ha Ha Tonka’ has a rigid and upright habit. It is a little bit taller than ‘The Blues’, another common cultivar of Little Bluestem. It also has outstanding fall colors.
Some of the skipper butterflies that utilize little bluestem as a host plant include: Common wood nymph (Cercyonis pegala), Dakota skipper (Hesperia dacotae), Leonard’s skipper (Hesparia leonardus), Cobweb Skipper (Hesperia metea), Dusted Skipper (Atrytonopsis hianna), Ottoe Skipper (Hesperia ottoe), Delaware Skipper (Anatrytone logan), Crossline Skipper, Swarthy Skipper
