Now small gardens can include a late-summer display of our native Joe Pye Weed. Eutrochium dubium ‘Baby Joe’ (formerly classified as Eupatorium dubium ‘Baby Joe’) bears the same ample lavender-rose flowers as its taller cousins, but on (somewhat) shorter stems that won’t flop. A favorite of butterflies, but not of deer.  Mature height 30-48″.

Some species within the Eupatorium genus have been reclassified into the Eutrochium genus based on genetic data, although their care, ecological role, and ornamental value remain unchanged. The Eutrochium genus is native to North America and includes a variety of tall, robust plants with beautiful, nectar-rich flowers that are excellent for attracting butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. Species include Eutrochium purpureum (Joe Pye Weed), Eutrochium maculatum (Spotted Joe Pye Weed), and Eutrochium dubium (Coastal Plain Joe Pye Weed). They play a significant role in native plant gardens and conservation landscapes due to their ecological benefits and adaptability to different garden settings.
