Symphyotrichum elliottii  is a fabulous East Coast native aster. Similar to the Asian Aster tataricus, the large green basal leaves give rise to giant 6-8′ tall spikes. Starting in late October, the wide-spreading patches are topped with a spectacular show of 1″ pink-purple daisies, that are loaded with Monarch butterflies.

Symphyotrichum elliottii is a stoloniferous species native to fresh and brackish marshes from Virginia south through Florida, although it grows easily in typical dry garden soil.

Host plant for numerous species of butterflies and moths, including the Confused Eusarca and Little Yellow.

Members of the genus Symphyotrichum support the following specialized bees: Andrena asteris, Andrena asteroides, Andrena hirticincta, Andrena nubecula, Andrena placata, Andrena simplex, and Colletes simulans

Georgia Aster is a native wildflower in the daisy family. It is typically found in dry rocky woodlands or in disturbed areas. Threats to survival include elimination of habitat disturbance such as fire. Other threats include road construction and herbicide application.

It prefers full sun in well-drained soils. This plant may be used in perennial borders or native meadow gardens. Bees and pollinators frequently visit this food source along with small mammals and deer.
